Aug 02 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Monday trade. Futures pointing to heavy opening declines in South Korea following Friday's record rally. Japan and Australia also tracking for negative start. Hong Kong futures flat. S&P 500 futures gaining. Bond markets in focus after Treasury yields backed up on Friday. Crude weakening amid latest de-escalation in Middle East tensions. Gold and silver rebounding. FX markets steady with yen strength the main story. Bitcoin little changed.

    • Yen rose to highest against dollar since mid-May. Japan Finance Minister Katayama expected to make announcement Monday confirming joint action with US last week to arrest excessive yen declines. When asked, President Trump described joint intervention as signal of friendship that will deliver financial benefit to US. Comes after Nikkei sources said authorities intervened for a second session on Friday, buying yen directly. Other press sources noted US banks asked to conduct EUR/JPY rate check before NY Fed sold euros. There remains risk of further action with Japan government official telling Reuters joint action remains ongoing.

    • Crude under some pressure after President Trump called off planned strikes against Iran to allow room for negotiations over Strait of Hormuz. Comes after Trump was said to have readied bombing campaign targeting Iranian civilian infrastructure. Trump said parameters of deal have been agreed to and Iran echoed by noting an agreement is close. Trump's latest backdown fits with the ongoing escalate-to-deescalate strategy though it remains unclear whether Iran will still seek to charge tolls and require ships seek its approval before entering. Compromise plan circulated in press would see ships enter on Iranian side and exit on Omani side.

    • South Korea export growth narrowed in June though still higher than consensus, underpinned by 179% increase in semiconductor shipments and more than 400% surge in shipments of PC-related products. China RatingDog manufacturing PMI forecast to show an uptick in factory activity, contrasting with official PMI unexpectedly falling back into contraction. Asia PMIs comes after factory activity expanded along with input cost pressures across emerging economies and major chip exporting nations last month.
