Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling mild opening decline in Japan, flat starts in Hong Kong and Australia, and small opening gain in South Korea. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds tracking earlier Treasury rally attributed to lower oil, focus on FIMA repo facility as yen support tool. Crude continues to pull lower amid Middle East diplomacy headlines. Gold and silver gaining. Dollar index steady after falling to mid-June lows. Bitcoin range bound.
Oil extended selloff amid signs of traction in negotiations between Iran and Oman on Strait of Hormuz. Proposal circulated in press would involve temporary route where ships enter via Iranian waters and exit via Omani side with no fee payment. Conflicting comments on whether US and Iran are talking (Iran denied Trump's claim two sides are in talks). However, market seemingly more focused on prospect of a diplomatic offramp that will reopen Strait of Hormuz possibly with some level of Iranian control.
Yen rose to highest against dollar since May following confirmation of joint US-Japan action to support the currency. BOJ data indicated Japan likely spent $34B in Friday's intervention following estimated $58B on Thursday. FIMA emphasis viewed as implicit message to markets intervention won't necessarily involve outright Treasury sales, giving Japan increased capacity for repeated actions. Also skepticism joint action will offer anything more than another temporary reprieve for yen given structural headwinds (rate differentials, oil, Japan fiscal outlook).
