Aug 03 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities ended mixed Monday. Nikkei and Topix closed lower post the joint US and Japan yen intervention program. South Korea Kospi conceded some of Friday's gains, Taiwan's Taiex ended higher. Losses in mainland China but the Hang Seng finished slightly higher. Australia posted another gain, India trading higher, Southeast Asia also seeing some gains. US futures higher, Europe opened mixed. US dollar DXY index below 100, yen stronger again, NZD and AUD weakening. Treasuries mixed, JGBs nudging higher. Crude oil lower with Brent back below $84/bl on optimism over middle east deal. Precious metals easing higher, base metals mixed. Cryptocurrencies under pressure.

    • Asia markets continued to digest the joint operation Friday by US and Japan authorities to support the yen alongside pledges to repeat the exercise if necessary. The yen strengthened to levels last seen in early May, taking JGB yields to three-week highs and sending the Nikkei 225 and Topix benchmarks lower, with particular pressure on export-facing names. US Treasury Secretary Bessent referenced the use of the Federal Reserve's Foreign and International Monetary Authorities (FIMA) Repo facility which provides temporary dollar liquidity, while there were reports Monday the Treasury may be using euros over dollars to fund yen purchases to avoid weakening the dollar further.

    • Elsewhere, the US called off a major attack on Iran that was hinted at last week to allow for talks to take place Monday, but Trump insisted the deal must be made quickly and include an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Crude oil prices dropped substantially first thing but thereafter stabilized with Brent around $84/bl and WTI at $80/bl. In economic developments, South Korea July exports expanded sharply as expected although there were some hints of a slowing in growth; household lending grew sharply on credit loans and mortgages. Regional PMIs were very strong with notable expansion in new orders and output almost everywhere; China's RatingDog manufacturing showed a deceleration in growth.

    • Alibaba (9988.HK) released its Qwen 3.8 Max model that places it above Moonshot's model on some metrics, according to a Bloomberg report. Daiwa Securities (8601.JP) quarterly profit rose to its highest in 13 years after a surge in global stock trading. Orix (8591.JP) has agreed to buy UK-based AerFin in a deal worth around ¥100B ($640M) including debt. Chery (9973.HK) is to invest $75M into South Korea's KG Mobility (003620.KS) through issue of KRW108B in convertible bonds. BYD (1211.HK) sales and output rose for a third consecutive month in July led by exports and EV sales.
