Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling big opening rallies in Japan and South Korea. Australia and Hong Kong tracking for mild initial gains. S&P 500 futures up slightly after US indexes posted fresh record highs and SOX surged another 7%. SPCX down 7% post-earnings. Australian bonds firming following Treasury rally. Crude extending declines. Gold and silver pulling back from earlier highs. FX markets steady after dollar regained some ground against yen. Bitcoin remains range bound.
Markets weighing latest sign of progress in negotiations to reopen Strait of Hormuz. Treasury Secretary Bessent said deal is close and media reports continue to mention contours of an agreement that would see ships enter via Iran side of Strait and exit via Oman side with possibility of service fees. While details remain sketchy, positive signals from Iran and US on state of negotiations drove a fresh oil selloff (WTI down to lowest since 10-Jul) and contributed to a downshift in bond yields.
SoftBank (9984.JP) reports Q1 earnings Thursday. Focus areas will revolve around extent of valuation gains from OpenAI and Arm investments, while balance sheet will face usual scrutiny over gearing levels amid broader concerns over OpenAI funding commitments. Some respite for SK Hynix (000660.KS) after US ADRs rallied 8% on Tuesday. Strength chalked up to raft of bullish sell-side rating initiations. Kospi's memory majors down 8% wtd with market weakness linked to retail deleveraging after government tightened curbs on single stock ETFs.
