Synopsis:
Asian markets set or negative start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea. S&P 500 futures higher afterhours after US indexes finished mostly lower with semis/memory lower (SOX down 1.4%). Australian bonds steady after Treasuries firmed amid an ongoing pullback in oil. Crude down to lowest since mid-July on Hormuz diplomatic traction. Gold marginally higher after logging best day since February. Silver flat following Wednesday rally. FX markets steady with yen consolidating following recent intervention. Bitcoin little changed.
Iran headlines continue to point to near-term agreement that reopens Strait of Hormuz with ships entering via Iran side and exiting via Oman coast. No tolls would be charged during 60-day period. Iran said deal with Oman had been reached though cautioned opening Strait depends on US meeting conditions such as lifting naval blockade. Tensions remain elevated elsewhere after Houthis claimed to have targeted Saudi oil tanker and threatened more attacks in Red Sea.
SoftBank (9984.JP) reports Q1 earnings later Thursday. Focus areas will revolve around extent of valuation gains from OpenAI and Arm investments, and while updates surrounding recent bets on energy and robotics will attract interest. Balance sheet will face usual scrutiny over elevated gearing levels amid broader concerns over OpenAI funding commitments. Stock rallied 13% Wednesday in-line with broader AI rally across Asia.
