Synopsis:
Asian markets set for muted start to Friday trade. Futures signaling flat opens in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. South Korea tracking for initial gains following Thursday's memory-driven selloff (SK Hynix US ADRs dropped 5%). S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds weakening following Treasury yield backup. Crude extending gains amid cautious Hormuz headlines. Gold and silver little changed. Yen continues to track lower against dollar in aftermath of last week's intervention. Bitcoin steady.
China trade data forecast to show export growth narrowing from prior month's sharp increase. Export momentum has been underpinned by strong demand for tech-related products, though some thought July shipment growth affected by impact of inclement weather on port activity. Import growth also forecast to have slowed. Last week's Politburo meeting reiterated proactive fiscal policy and moderately loose monetary policy stance, though authorities avoided signaling major stimulus package. July PMIs showed manufacturing fell back into contraction amid declines in output and new orders.
Oil rebounded after Strait of Hormuz headlines turned more cautious. Risk sentiment this week helped by progress towards a deal reopening Strait of Hormuz, though latest reports highlighted maximalist Iranian demands on transit control and fees that were seen risking deal's acceptance by US. Iran aiming to ban US ships from transit until it receives war compensation, and shipping industry argued proposed route (entry via Iran, exit via Oman) not workable due to US sanctions. Red Sea tensions also elevated amid Saudi-Houthi military clashes in Yemen.
