Asia markets ended mixed Thursday. Technology-leaning boards in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan all posted losses with the Kospi down 4.6%; a steep decline in Hong Kong and Shenzhen but Shanghai's main benchmarks stayed positive. Australia at a fresh record high as gold spikes; Singapore and India higher, emerging Southeast Asia mixed. US futures mixed, Europe seeing some modest gains in the first hour. US dollar unchanged, more weakness in the NZD and AUD, yen and yuan flat. Treasury yields higher, JGB yields lower. Precious metals mixed, Crude futures slightly higher as Brent hovers around $80/bl. Base metals mixed.
Asia stocks veered lower Thursday as chipmakers in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan declined to give up some of this week's gains following Sandisk (SNDK) and Western Digital (WDC) earnings after the close last night. Traders also casting a nervous eye on the end of lockup for SpaceX (SPCX) shares later today. Nasdaq futures trading lower for now but S&P 500 and Dow eying a positive open for now. SK Hynix (000660.KS) down more than 10% after the stock slumped 30% on the Nextrade system pre-market while Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) also closed sharply lower.
Hong Kong dragged lower on news China's regional governments have started to target overseas insurance policies for tax purposes, hurting AIA (1299.HK) and HSBC (5.HK), after overnight losses at London-listed Prudential. In other developments, reports overnight Iran and Oman had come to an agreement over the Strait of Hormuz in the near term, but Tehran said the deal was dependent on Washington lifting its blockade. Brent crude continued to trade just below $80/bl but markets increasingly pricing in a lasting ceasefire and resumption of crude traffic through the Gulf.
Nintendo (7974.JP) beat earnings estimates for Q2 thanks to tariff refunds from the US and sales of two in-house developed titles for its Switch 2 console. SoftBank (9984.JP) posted a narrower-than-expected drop in quarterly net income as it booked a ¥1.3T ($8.5B) investment gain on its Intel shares. An Australian environmental regulator has sue Inpex (1605.JP) over LNG emissions breaches at its Ichthys LNG project near Darwin. DBS (D05.SP ) raised its FY guidance after quarterly profits jumped to their second highest on record. Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) said its pre-orders for next generation foldables jumped 30% y/y. Qantas (QAN.AU) international pilots voted in favor of potential strike action as part of a years-long negotiation.
