  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets ended mixed to higher with Stoxx 600 posting fresh intraday record on corporate results. Media, telecom, banks, energy and utilities outperform; industrials, travel and tech the main laggards.

    • On the macro data front, German factory orders much stronger than expected due to large scale orders. Eurozone retail sales missed consensus, down 0.3% in June, Spanish and Italian industrial production missed. Eurozone and UK construction PMIs came in better than expected, but remained in contractionary territory. Meanwhile, UK press highlighted pushback by banking sector against potential tax raid ahead of autumn budget. Flow data saw UK investors pull money out of equity markets on uncertainty surrounding policies of new government.

    • In central banks updates, Bloomberg reported that the German government is considering whether to nominate Bundesbank chief Nagel for the ECB presidency. Lagarde's term runs until October 2027 but speculation on her role picked up after the Dutch government officially back its former central bank governor Knot for the role on Wednesday.

    • A busy earnings calendar saw strong beats from the continent's largest companies. In the DACH region, companies delivering beats included Siemens (SIE.GR), Deutsche Telekom (DTE.GR), Merck KGaA (MRK.GR), Commerzbank (CBK.GR), Rheinmetall (RHM.GR), Henkel (HEN3.GR). Beats also from Zurich Insurance Group (ZURN.SW), Adecco (ADEN.SW) and Swiss Re (SREN.SW). Fraport (FRA.GR) was a notable miss.

    • In the Netherlands, SBM Offshore (SBMO.NA) was a standout with raised FY revenue guidance whilst NN Group (NN.NA) beat on Operating Capital Generation and hiked its interim dividend. Also notable, BPER Banca (BPE.IM) posted Q2 net income of €758M vs €689.8M expected and improved its FY NII guidance.

    • In the UK, WPP Group (WPP.LN) H1 revenue less pass-through costs fell 4.7% like-for-like to £4.75B, ahead of consensus of £4.65B. Admiral Group (ADM.LN) H1 pretax profit of £429M missed consensus by 1%; EPS of 109.0p missed by 3%; however group combined ratio of 78.5% beat expectations. Wizz Air Holdings (WIZZ.LN) swung to €183.3M Q1 operating loss. Persimmon (PSN.LN) reported H1 Underlying PBT £170.1M and sees FY26 underlying PBT in line with market expectations; flagged additional inflationary pressure in 2027. Hikma Pharmaceuticals (HIK.LN) reported H1 Core EPS $1.28 vs consensus $1.12 and confirmed FY guidance.

    • On M&A front, EasyJet (ESJ.LN) agrees to be acquired by Apollo for £7.15 in cash.
