Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and South Korea. S&P 500 futures down slightly after US indexes logged their strongest week since April. Australian bonds firming, tracking Friday's Treasury rally following soft US payrolls data. Crude strengthening amid latest setback in Strait of Hormuz reopening talks. Gold flat while silver adding to Friday's gains. FX markets steady following dollar's post-payrolls retreat. Bitcoin near month-to-date high.
Still no traction on Strait of Hormuz after Iran issued hardline demands before agreeing to reopen. Foreign Minister Araghchi said deal with Oman in final stages while repeating that reopening depends on conditions such as US paying billions in compensation, withdrawing forces from surrounding areas, unfreezing assets and lifting sanctions. List of demands considered unacceptable to US and Trump signaled he is content to continue economic pressure campaign so long as gas prices remain around current levels.
China PPI inflation softened amid lower fuel prices while CPI inflation fell to lowest since January. BOJ Summary of Opinions (Mon) will detail board member views at July's meeting where rates were left unchanged with board reaffirming intent to continue tightening. RBA (Tues) expected to remain unchanged after Q2 inflation came in softer. Governor Bullock will testify before House committee on Friday. China credit data (unscheduled) and India CPI (Wed) among other Asia data points. US CPI (Wed) a focus following hawkish-leaning commentary from some policymakers voicing openness to rate hikes.
