StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.69%), Hang Seng Futures +0.05%, ASX SPI 200 (0.03%), S&P Futures (0.08%)

Aug 10 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for muted start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling unchanged opens in Hong Kong and Australia, and mild initial declines in South Korea. Japan closed for Mountain Day holiday. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds weakening ahead of RBA meeting. Treasury yields up 5-6 bp overnight. Crude little changed following earlier rally to above $80. Gold and silver stronger. FX markets steady after dollar rose most against yen. Bitcoin down to one-week low.

    • Not much in way of leads following quiet offshore session. Strait of Hormuz stalemate a key talking point, helping to drive rally in oil though equity markets looked past the headlines. Memory, semis weaker with SOX down 3%. Latest AI discussions were around AI financing (Nvidia confirmed $500B data center deal with Wall Street firms, Intel announced $15B equity offering) and memory costs (Apple reportedly testing CXMT memory chips for China products).

    • Yen weakness the big story in FX markets with currency having given back around half of its post-intervention gains since end of July. Nothing specific behind the latest weakness, partly a function of broader dollar strength as markets nudged up probability of a September Fed rate hike to ~50%. Dollar strength also tracked upward move in yields and oil amid hawkish Strait of Hormuz developments. Yen weakness renewing talk about efficacy of intervention and risk of fresh action with liquidity thinning out during Japan's public holiday.

    • RBA expected to leave cash rate unchanged at 4.35%. While domestic demand is weakening, elevated inflation, weak productivity, continued Middle East uncertainties and risk of further cost passthrough seen supporting a continued stance that policy needs to remain restrictive. Communication expected to reinforce wait-and-see approach with Governor Bullock repeating board prepared to hike cash rate further if needed. Market pricing in 60% chance of another rate hike by end-2026, down from ~100% probability in late July.
