Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in South Korea, flat start in Japan and small initial declines in Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds firming, tracking overnight Treasury curve bull flattening. Crude maintaining overnight gains amid ongoing Middle East tensions. Gold and silver little changed. FX markets steady. Bitcoin flat near one-week low.
Oil markets swung on latest Middle East developments. Initial weakness attributed to claims by mediators that a deal on Strait of Hormuz is close, which seemed to contradict hardline positions staked out by Iran that were considered a non-starter for US. Adviser to Iran Supreme Leader Khamenei reiterated Strait will not reopen until demands are met. Red Sea tensions notched higher after Houthis struck commercial vessels, killing multiple sailors. US military also fired on cargo ship attempting to make a run past naval blockade.
Markets on watch for US July CPI later Wednesday. Forecast to show uptick in headline inflation while core inflation seen rising at slowest pace since February. Data takes on added importance following hawkish-leaning commentary from Fed officials voicing openness to rate hike to bring down elevated inflation. Odds of a September rate hike have climbed back above 50% following dovish repricing in aftermath of Friday's soft payrolls data.
