Aug 12 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised for a mixed open Thursday. Futures in South Korea extended yesterday's rally, Japan also advanced sharply, while Hong Kong and Australia declined. Japan ADRs were mixed (banks higher, autos lower), while Golden Dragon China index fell a sharp 2.38%. US contracts flat (S&P) to softer (Nasdaq) in early Asia trading. Follows mostly higher performance in cash in a generally uneventful session consistent with the summer holiday period. Sectors were mostly positive, led by IT and real estate. SOX index rose a solid 2.49% -- Mag 7 almost all softer, broader big tech group mostly firmer. Dollar index up 0.2%. Gold finished up 0.6%. Bitcoin futures down 0.3%. WTI crude ended up 0.1%.

    • Market attention concentrated on US CPI, where in-line headline metrics confirmed expectations of easing inflation pressure, dovetailing with earlier weak employment data. However, major asset classes were reluctant to price in such an outcome amid lingering wariness to tail risks. September Fed rate hike odds declined to 40%. Latest dollar strength essentially erased earlier selling pressure into the data release. Some talk in Japan that authorities were prepared to intervene again depending on CPI headline effects. Latest tech earnings added to optimism on the back of positive takeaways from CoreWeave (CRWV), Super Micro Computer (SMCI).

    • In regional developments, Tencent ADRs (TCHEHY) sold off 5.44% despite key earnings metrics beating street estimates, while capex growth came in well above consensus and some thoughts net income underwhelmed. PBOC quarterly policy report reaffirmed a 'moderately loose' policy stance. Content was largely benign based on a sanguine economic assessment and no clear signs of urgency. Japan corporate fundamentals looking upbeat with bulk of earnings in hand. Latest Q1 aggregates for TSE Prime Market names registered the sharpest growth in net profit since the post-Covid rebound driven by AI demand and weak yen. FY dividends on track for the sixth straight record high with the majority of names increasing payouts, underscoring the breadth of AI tailwinds.
