  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equites ended mixed Wednesday. South Korea's Kospi outperformed the region comfortably while Japan's two main benchmarks also rose following yesterday's holiday. Taiwan and mainland China benchmarks closed higher. But there were losses in Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney and Mumbai. Southeast Asia was mixed, Thailand closed for a holiday. Nasdaq and S&P 500 futures higher, Europe lower in the first hour. US dollar unchanged, NZD lower but little forex movement of note elsewhere. Treasury bonds mixed, gains for JGB yields. Crude futures higher but Brent holding below $90/bl. Precious metals resuming their recent rally, base metals also higher.

    • Asia equities were again mixed Wednesday as semiconductor stocks outperformed. Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS) were boosted by reports Temasek is to build stakes in both companies while CoreWeave's 16% surge after hours in New York provided additional support. The Hang Seng's underperformance was led by its internet & IT sector as its reverse correlation with the Kospi resumed, while India was weighed by Tata group stocks following the resignation of Tata Sons' chairman.

    • Elsewhere, regional sentiment hit again by elevated Brent crude prices as the impasse in the Gulf continued. Overnight, Tehran insisted its own demands be met before the Strait of Hormuz reopens while President Trump said he was 'low-keying' talks. Meanwhile, transit traffic through Hormuz fell to a one-week low Tuesday as attacks from the US and Houthis on traffic in the waterway continued. In other developments, data showed overseas investors were returning to Taiwan in August following outflow in July. Japan's Tankan survey for August improved amid strong chip demand. South Korea's unemployment ticked higher for a second consecutive month.

    • Singapore sovereign wealth fund Temasek has decided to invest into Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS), according to AsiaBusinessDaily report. Singapore Airlines (C6L.SP) said it had lost around $800M on its investment into Air India (05W46N-E) and expects more losses ahead. Rio Tinto's (RIO.AU) partly owned Tomago aluminum smelter is to receive an Australia government bailout to keep the plant operating amid high energy costs. Tata Sons (+TATASONS.IN) chairman resigned before a key shareholder meeting amid uncertainty over his reappointment as director.
