Synopsis:
European indices ended in negative territory. Markets cautious amid doubts over claims that deal on Strait of Hormuz is close. President Trump countered Iran's Hormuz-reopening conditions with demands for compensation over past conflict deaths, dimming near-term deal prospects. Iran maintaining its hardline position that Strait will not reopen until its expanded list of demands are met. Two sides locked in standoff with US military firing on cargo ship attempting to make a run past naval blockade. Tensions elevated elsewhere after Houthis struck commercial vessels in Red Sea. According to tracking data, fewer ships have been transiting Bab el-Mandeb and Hormuz straits in recent days
Big macro focus on US inflation print: July core CPI in line on both m/m and y/y basis. Core services higher, driven by another 0.1 pp increase in shelter (or around two-thirds of overall increase), jump in airfares. Core goods up 0.2 pp, reversing last month's 0.1% contraction as new and used vehicles, apparel turned positive. Following print, policy-sensitive 2Y yield little changed, suggesting little change in Fed rate pricing
Limited macro updates of note in Europe: final German CPI unchanged from flash, Italian reading revised up a fraction. Bank of France said economy will maintain growth momentum in current quarter, with GDP seen rising 0.2% in three months through to September, based on monthly poll of businesses. German press said Berlin anticipating government could lose its AAA credit rating. On of the UK's largest real estate developers Bellway has called on UK government to bring back Help to Buy and cut stamp duty to stimulate subdued housing market
On the earnings front, E.ON (EOAN.GR) posted a slight beat on good performance in industrial business, whilst TUI Group (TUI1.GR) missed due to Iran war and impact of high fuel costs; Brenntag (BNR.GR), Hannover Re (HNR1.GR) and K+S AG (SDF.GR) also reported. In Denmark, Vestas Wind Systems (VWS.DC) posted a Q2 beat and raised FY EBIT margin guidance along on top of a new share buyback. Demant (DEMANT.DC) and Matas (MATAS.DC) updated investors as well. Out of the UK, Balfour Beatty (BBY.LN) released a strong H1 update y/y and increased FY guidance; elsewhere, ABN AMRO Bank (ABN.NA) beat Q2 estimates
In M&A news; Kingspan Group (KRX.ID) announced the agreement to acquire 100% of BMC Manufacturing Group and FTC granted a antitrust clearance for Bouygues SA's (EN.FP) purchase of Suit-Kote Corp
