Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and South Korea, mild initial losses in Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures unchanged after index closed at fresh all-time high. Australian bond yields little changed after Treasuries firmed following benign PPI data. Crude and gold unchanged following overnight weakness. FX markets steady with dollar unmoved by PPI data. Bitcoin remains range bound.
Softer-than-expected US PPI put more traction behind disinflation narrative following in-line CPI that was viewed as dovish in terms of Fed policy implications. Prompted another bond rally as markets wound back September Fed rate hike odds to ~32% from ~50% earlier in the week. Bonds also helped by a pullback in oil with US and Iran appearing to settle into a stalemate over Strait of Hormuz amid competing claims of control (though also more reports about crude being shipped out of Hormuz under stealth).
Yen continues to erase post-intervention gains with currency nearing 160-per dollar that was been mentioned as a psychological level. Yen maintained its downward trend following Bloomberg source report BOJ likely to hike in September or October. Japan's government also said to be supportive of near-term rate hike. Dovish repricing of Fed rate path following US inflation data has provided little reprieve for yen with FX strategists noting market focus is more around BOJ messaging about the pace of rate hikes.
