Synopsis:
Asia equities rallied Friday as several technology leaning benchmarks advanced again. The Kospi, Nikkei 225 and Shenzhen all ended higher but the Taiex dipped into its close. Shanghai's benchmarks were flat while Hong Kong traded lower. Australia finished the week on a poor note, losses for India, Southeast Asia was mixed. US futures near unchanged, Europe opened mixed. US dollar dipping quite sharply late on, yen strengthened on BOJ comments, NZD recovering yesterday's losses, quiet elsewhere. Treasury and JGB yields higher, CGB yields fell to a year-long low. Crude futures higher but still within their week's trading range. Precious metals lower, base metals mixed.
Tech stocks rallied again Friday amid a more constructive near-term sentiment shift following a bullish outlook from Kioxia-partner Sandisk overnight, as well as fading expectations of a Fed rate hike in September. Fed Fund futures now show a below 33% chance of a US rate hike on 16-Sep having been 50/50 as recently as the start of the week, and comes after softer-than-expected PPI and a tick lower in CPI. Sentiment also supported by crude oil trading within a narrow band all week despite negative-leaning news coming from the Gulf with the US seemingly pivoting to an economic pressure campaign over military action.
Elsewhere, yet more newsflow on BOJ hiking rates in September after a Reuters report cited three sources saying the bank was considering a more aggressive tightening trajectory even after a September hike. Several Japan-based tech stocks also boosted by reports US fund managers are waiting for approval to launch leveraged ETFs linked to Kioxia (285A.JP) with those tied to Toyota Motor (8035.JP) Sony Group (6758.JP) and SoftBank (9984.JP) waiting in the wings.
Nintendo (7974.JP) said sales of its Pokémon Pokopia game had topped 5M units since its March launch while posting strong Q1 sales. JD.com (9618.HK) posted its first revenue decline since 2014, reflecting poor consumer sentiment in China; stock sharply lower with Meituan (3690.HK) lower on read across. DeepSeek (+DEEPSEEK ) has quadrupled its flagship AI model prices before it launches its IPO process. CK Hutchison (1.HK) said the forced termination of operations at its Panama ports cut throughput by around 1% in H1 although the entire portfolio performed better y/y/. Air India (05W46N-E ) is to expand drug testing to include all pilots after a positive marijuana test came back from a captain.
