Synopsis:
European equity markets ended mixed with pan-European indices failing to sustain the move higher and gradually reversing earlier gains. Media, insurance, oil & gas the best performing sectors, while healthcare, utilities and basic resources the main laggards.
Risk appetite remains mostly positive, with pullback in Fed rate hike expectations a supportive factor in the last couple of sessions. Softer-than-expected US PPI put more traction behind disinflation narrative following in-line CPI. Markets have wound back September Fed rate hike odds to around 30% from 50% earlier in the week. No diplomatic progress on US-Iran situation. US sending fresh aircraft carrier to region. Treasury Secretary Bessent flagged unprecedented economic action against Iran next week as White House renews economic pressure campaign in lieu of restarting hostilities.
Back in Europe, a quiet macro calendar included German wholesale prices firmed up in July, while French final CPI in line with flash. Eurozone second Q2 GDP estimate unchanged from flash at 0.4%. Swiss Q2 GDP beat forecast with highest quarterly growth rate in five years at 1.5%. German press discusses country's export boom to eastern Europe helping to mitigate impact of slump in trade with the US and China.
In other news, BoE's Chief Economist Pill said stronger-than-expected GDP figures reinforced the case for higher borrowing costs. Reform UK leader Farage was re-elected in the Clacton by-election with 62.8% of the vote but could face another election if an ethics enquiry finds that he violated rules over a donation.
In corporate news, EnergieKontor (EKT.GR) sharply cut 2026 earnings guidance, with expected pretax profit reduced to €5-10M from €40-60M. Nagarro (NA9.GR), SFC Energy (F3C.GR) and Talanx (TLX.GR) reported their most recent numbers. Also in the DACH region, Norma Group (NOEJ.GR) announced a up to 9.3M off-market share buyback at €22.35/share Out of the Nordics, DFDS (DFDS.DC) raised full-year EBIT guidance to DKK1.2-1.4B and revenue-growth expectations to 3-5%; Q2 revenue slightly exceeded consensus while EBIT matched. NKT A/S (NKT.GR) Q2 on track despite weaker revenues, as 500bp y/y Transmission margin improvement and strong GS&A activity drove underlying EBITDA 6% above expectations. In the UK, Aviva (AV.LN) reported H1 numbers including EPS 31.8p vs FactSet 30.5p said it is on track to deliver its three-year Group targets. In other corporate headlines, Valneva (VLA.FP) shares rallied today following EMA's validation of the Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for PF-07307405, the companies' 6-valent outer surface protein A (OspA)-based Lyme disease vaccine candidate and will begin its assessment of the application.
On M&A front, Diversified Energy (DEC.LN) confirmed that it has had preliminary discussions concerning a possible acquisition of Eliott-owned Birch Resources.
The week ahead sees Riksbank interest rate decision, Eurozone, France, Germany, UK Aug preliminary manufacturing/services PMIs, UK Jul inflation data, Germany Aug ZEW survey as well as earnings/updates from Aegon (AGN.NA), Carlsberg (CARL.B.DC), Coloplast (COLO.B.DC), Geberit (GEBN.SW), Hays (HAS.LN), JD Sports Fashion (JD.LN), Orkla (ORK.NO) and Straumann Holding (STMN.SW).
