Aug 17 ,2026
Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Tuesday trade. Futures signalling opening declines in Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and Japan. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds weakening after Treasury curve steepened with 30Y yield hitting highest since 2007. Crude adding to overnight gains. Gold flat. FX markets steady after dollar ended little changed. Bitcoin rebounded towards one-week high.
Bond yield backup in focus with long end Treasuries under pressure. Some discussion lately about overhangs from Fed credibility doubts, elevated corporate supply and concerns about US fiscal trajectory. Yield backup dovetailed with latest oil rally amid US-Iran diplomatic standoff. Across Asia, JGB 10Y yield rose to highest in 30 years. While Japan GDP data came in soft, markets continue to price in ~80% probability of a BOJ rate hike in September following source reports policymakers weighing stepping up pace of tightening.
Crude reached highest since late July after President Trump said he wouldn't seek extension of 60-day ceasefire that expired Monday. Trump also threatened to bomb Oman if it got in way of US talks with Iran. While Iran indicated an agreement with Oman on managing Strait of Hormuz has been finalized, US is vowing to maintain naval blockade until waterway is reopened. Iran also responded with fresh threats to escalate conflict if diplomatic stalemate continues much longer.
