  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities ended mixed to slightly higher Monday. Japan's Nikkei 225 closed with gains but the Topix fell slightly. Greater China outperformed with advances in most of its major benchmarks including Hong Kong despite a dip into the close. Taiwan ended marginally higher. Losses for Australia, India and Singapore. South Korea closed for a holiday. US futures mixed with Nasdaq higher but S&P 500 lower, Europe opened with small gains. US dollar down sharply, the AUD and NZD at two-month peaks, yen also stronger. Treasury yields lower at the long end, higher at the short; JGB yields higher with the 10Y at fresh 30-year high. Precious metals added to recent gains, base metals led higher by copper. Crude oil futures flat with Brent just below $89/bl.

    • Asia stocks ended with a positive tilt Monday as investors continued to down shift expectations of a Fed Reserve rate hike in September with Fed Fund Futures now indicating a 30% chance of a hike. But traders also eying the lack of progress over the weekend in Gulf peace talks with the conflict seemingly at a stalemate while crude prices remain at elevated levels. Several individual moves in the region's tech stocks today as Seoul remained closed for a holiday; Kioxia (285A.JP) up more than 15%, and CXMT (688825.CH) up 12% on continuation rallies, while several Taiwan-traded names fell.

    • In other developments, China July economic data missed expectations. Industrial output grew 4.5% y/y versus FactSet consensus of 4.9%; retail sales grew 0.6% versus consensus 1.5%; fixed asset investment contracted by more than expected 6.7% including a 24% contraction in property investment; unemployment ticked higher. Separate data showed July average house prices fell another 3.4% y/y. The NBS added that some firms were facing operating difficulties amid a 'complex external environment'.

    • Elsewhere, Japan Q2 GDP growth slowed by more than expected as consumption disappointed and offset strong export growth. Plenty of weekend press reports on this month's yen intervention with some calling the US-Japan pledge a new "Plaza Accord"; meanwhile markets pricing in an 80% chance of a BoJ rate hike in September amid weak yen. Singapore's volatile exports grew above 20% y/y for the fourth consecutive month driven by very strong expansion in tech shipments. Thailand's Q2 GDP growth declined from Q1 due to high energy prices and weak household consumption.

    • Alibaba (9984.HK) is to sell its gaming arm Lingxi for more than $2B as it divests non-core assets and focuses on AI and cloud. Shein (+SHEIN) is seeking a $25B valuation in its Hong Kong IPO later this week, sources told Reuters. a2 Milk (ATM.NZ) said FY profits fell on weaker China-labeled IMF sales and forecast weak earnings ahead due to supply-chain disruptions. National Australia Bank (NAB.AU) said NIM had contracted and mortgage applications had dropped sharply. The India state food safety regulator has targeted grocery companies including Eternal (543320.IN), Swiggy (544285.IN) and Zepto (ZEPTO.IN) over unhygienic conditions.
