  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed lower and near session's lowest levels. Last week saw Stoxx 600 record first weekly decline in four weeks. Health Care, Basic Resources and Technology were the best performing sectors. Food & Beverage, Personal and Household Goods and Retail underperformed.

    • Limited fresh catalysts for European markets. Strait of Hormuz standoff continues to underpin European energy risk pricing, but Q2 earnings have been supportive for regional markets. While markets have reduced Fed rate hike expectations, last Friday's backup in rates a point of focus. Analysts and financial press continue to discuss structural pressures, with high debt/borrowing and AI-related corporate supply. European press continues to discuss impact of extreme weather on business activity and productivity.

    • Quiet macro calendar at start of the week. German Economic Institute survey showed German companies have cut investment in the US to a three-year low in H1 2026. S&P Global UK consumer confidence measures weakened. UK employment group CIPD said PM Burnham should partly reverse the national insurance increase and slows plans to equalize minimum wage changes to revive the labor market. UK Rightmove house price update saw biggest drop in August asking prices since 2017.

    • Macro calendar picks up tomorrow with German ZEW and UK labor market update due, while Wednesday sees UK inflation and European PMIs due Friday

    • In corporate news, flatexDEGIRO (FTK.GR) reported final Q2/H1 earnings in line with its preliminary release and reaffirmed its FY guidance. In Switzerland, SIG Combibloc Group (SIGN.SW) appointed Ann-Kristin Erkens as CEO with immediate effect, replacing Mikko Keto. Elsewhere, AstraZeneca (AZN.LN) and argenx (ARGX.BB) reported study results, with the latter trading sharply higher after announcing positive topline results from the Phase 3 ALKIVIA trial of Efgartigimod in autoimmune myositis. Also in the UK, Telecom Plus (TEP.LN) issued an AGM trading statement reaffirming its FY guidance and confirming it's on track to deliver its long-term goal.
