StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (2.21%), Hang Seng Futures (0.27%), ASX SPI 200 (0.27%), S&P Futures (0.03%)

Aug 18 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling steep opening declines in Japan and South Korea. Hong Kong and Australia tracking for smaller initial losses. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds firming following reversal in Treasuries. Crude adding to earlier gains while gold and silver extending declines. FX markets steady with dollar little changed against majors. Bitcoin near one-week high.

    • Some respite for bond markets after Treasury yields reversed lower following preceding backup that took 30Y to highest levels since 2007. More discussion about likely drivers from widening fiscal deficits/sovereign debt burdens, AI-driven ramp in corporate issuance, above-target inflation and central bank credibility concerns, and higher oil. Volatility spurring usual debate about outlook for bonds though spillover effects outside of semis/memory (SK Hynix ADRs fell 9%, SOX down 5%). have been limited so far.

    • Crude remains near highest levels since July after President Trump said no talks with Iran are going on, leaving US and Iran in a continued stalemate over Strait of Hormuz. Shipping activity remains scarce though US claiming more crude barrels exiting Gulf than tracking data shows, helping to contain prices. Comes amid reports White House favoring strategy of facilitating vessel transit while maintaining naval blockade. However, that is also drawing concerns about Iranian retaliation with UAE saying it was target of ballistic missile attack.

    • Unitree Robotics debuts in Shanghai after raising CNY6.1B ($904M) with Bloomberg noting retail portion more than 5,500x oversubscribed. Strong retail interest seen portending strong trading debut for Unitree in STAR market after retail orders exceeded CXMT ahead of its IPO in July. In other company news Alibaba ADRs rose 3%, extending Hong Kong momentum following Alipay's launch of new commerce platform..
