  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed mostly lower. Tech, Industrial and Travel & Leisure the biggest laggards; Health Care , Personal Care Drug and Grocery Stores and Utilities best performers. Follows softer performance on Monday.

    • Bond yield backup in focus with long end Treasuries under pressure and creating spillover effects across regional markets. Some discussion lately about overhangs on Treasuries from Fed credibility doubts, elevated corporate supply and concerns about US fiscal trajectory. Yield backup has also dovetailed with latest oil rally amid US-Iran diplomatic standoff. US 30Y above 5.30% and Japan 10Y highest in 30 years.

    • Crude at highest since late July after President Trump said he wouldn't seek extension of 60-day ceasefire that expired Monday. Trump also threatened to bomb Oman if it got in way of US talks with Iran. While Iran indicated an agreement with Oman on managing Strait of Hormuz has been finalized, US is vowing to maintain naval blockade until waterway is reopened. Iran also responded with fresh threats to escalate conflict if diplomatic stalemate continues much longer.

    • On macro data front, UK focus on labor market data ahead of tomorrow's inflation update. Headline numbers mixed, yet underlying details remained soft. Claimant count dropped, but number of payrolled employees fell. Average weekly earnings were firmer than expected on the headline, yet private sector pay lowest since late 2020. German and Eurozone ZEW sentiment jumped in July. Meanwhile, UK food inflation lowest level in nearly two years. Elsewhere, ECB chief economist Lane expects inflation ~3% for remainder of 2026, and said ECB faces very uncertain situation.

    • Light in earnings today; out of DACHs, HUBER+SUHNER (HUBN.SW) shares are trading ~(7%) lower post miss for H1 sales and EBIT, while company reported strong orders and reaffirmed FY guidance. Basilea Pharmaceutica (BSLN.SW) shares are trading ~7% higher post solid beat for H1 sales and operating income and raised FY guidance. Medartis (MED.SW) also up H1 and raised FY core sales growth expectations. In Denmark, Coloplast (COLO.B.DC) posted Q3 mixed results with organic growth +5.8%, slightly above consensus, but EBIT margin of 26.2% fell short; FY2025/26 guidance was maintained. In the UK, BHP Group (BHP.LN) reported FY numbers; Kainos Group (KNOS.LN) shares are up ~20% at this time post positive FY trading update reporting strong start to the year and increased FY27 guidance.

    • In M&A, Frasers Group (FRAS.LN) secures ~47.89% acceptance in HUGO BOSS (BOSS.GR) offer. Court reportedly grants FTC's motion to block Henkel's (HEN3.GR) purchase of Liquid Nails. dormakaba Holding (DOKA.SW) acquires Azure Access Technology Inc.

    • Looking ahead to tomorrow's calendar (see - Europe Week Ahead: 17-Aug to 21-Aug attached) Ithaca Energy (ITH.LN),Geberit (GEBN.SW), Straumann Holding (STMN.SW), BKW (BKW.SW), Latour Investment (LATO.B.SS), Ambea (AMBEA.SS), Carlsberg (CARL.B.DC), Jyske Bank (JYSK.DC), H. Lundbeck (HLUN.B.DC), and Flughafen Wien (FLU.AV) will be amongst other names to update investors, whilst the macro-calendar releases will include Eurozone Jul final CPI, UK Jul CPI/RPI/PPI input/output, Austria Jul final CPI, Switzerland Q2 industrial production.
