Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Australia. S&P 500 futures up slightly afterhours after US indexes logged small gains Wednesday. Australian bonds tracking overnight Treasury rally. Crude unchanged. Gold and silver remain higher following 3% rally in cash session. FX markets steady after dollar retreated alongside Treasury yields. Bitcoin surged to highest since early June.
Bond rally the big market development after Treasury Department announced ramp in size of buyback operations for longer-term debt. Headline effects of the announcement drove big fall in long end yields. Move nonetheless invited skepticism given structural drivers of higher yields (fiscal deficit/debt) remain intact. Ramp in corporate issuance, higher oil and related inflation risks have also formed part of the bearish bond market narrative lately.
SK Hynix (000660.KS) announced plans to repurchase/cancel KRW40T (~$29B) of shares over three months (3.3% of total shares outstanding). Also said it would return at least 50% of cumulative FCF generated for 2025-27, up from prior target of within 50%. Company had been expected to announce its capital return strategy following pressure from shareholders. Attention turns to Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), which is expected to announce its own capital return policies soon.
China expected to keep 1Y and 5Y loan prime rates on hold, marking 15th straight month of no change. Soft July economic data renewed discussions about need and likelihood of policy support though authorities instead seen leaning on quicker implementation of existing measures than introducing fresh stimulus. Japan trade data follows recent acceleration in exports underpinned by semiconductors & electronics. No change expected to Australian unemployment rate.
