Synopsis:
The Japan stocks face a weak open today as Nikkei 225 futures tumbled over (1%) overnight, weighed by North Korea's latest ballistic missile barrage and overnight Wall Street retreat with Nasdaq down (1.0%) and Dow plunge (1.3%).
Adding to domestic macro headlines, Japan's government unveiled a record ¥8.9T defense budget request, lifting defense names but signaling fiscal strain (Japan Times ).
On the positive side for the tech/semis complex, Broadcom is reportedly eyeing a ~$100B debt package to fund AI infrastructure expansion, and Samsung Electronics poised for $72B shareholder return program. Whereas, Walmart's (9.2%) decline on weak US comparable sales may dampen consumer discretionary sentiment.
Yen slightly firmer at ¥159.05/$, capping export-related upside.
