Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening decline in South Korea, initial gain in Hong Kong, and muted open in Japan and Australia. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds little changed after Treasuries firmed following recent yield backup. Crude little changed. Gold and silver higher in post-settlement trade. FX markets steady with dollar stabilizing near May lows. Bitcoin pushing up to mid-May highs.
Treasury Secretary Bessent's 'Economic D-Day' announcement seen to have fallen short of preceding rhetoric. Bessent announced new sanctions on 60 individuals, entities and vessels but China or its banks weren't named as targets, which fit with skepticism about US targeting China and risking retaliation/economic blowback so close to midterm elections. Iran struck defiant tone after warning it would retaliate by targeting non-Hormuz shipping and any country supporting sanctions. Crude little changed following Bessent's press conference.
Trade tensions in focus after President Trump announced Canadian cars, truck auto parts, steel to be hit with 50% tariffs starting in 2027. Follows breakdown in trade talks that triggered 50% US tariffs on non-USMCA goods and subsequent relation by Canada. Separately, Bloomberg sources noted US set to impose 7.5% tariff on China over allegations of excess manufacturing capacity, which would return tariffs on China back to around 20%. However, unclear whether that would prompt retaliation with China previously noting 20% duty consistent with trade truce.
