Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling stronger open in South Korea, mild initial gains in Hong Kong and Australia, and flat start in Japan. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds firming after Treasury yields extended downshift with curve flattening. Crude down to mid-August lows following latest Iran diplomacy headlines. FX markets steady with dollar not doing much against majors. Gold holding near April highs. Bitcoin retreated after touching $80K.
Oil pullback attributed to reports about progress on Strait of Hormuz with Iran and Oman finalizing their previously announced agreement to establish an alternative and temporary shipping lane. Unclear whether deal includes tolls and an inspection regime, and whether US will accept. There were reports of "significant progress" in Iran-Pakistan mediation talks though nothing new there. US denied it is involved in negotiations with Iran and Axios noted White House has settled on strategy of continuing economic pressure until after midterm elections.
AI trade outperformed overnight with SOX up 1% and SK Hynix's ADRs strengthening 3%. Asian semis/memory names finished Tuesday's session off their worst levels following initial weakness tabbed to financing concerns, memory cost pressures and open-weight competition. Nothing specific behind the bounce and waiting game continues ahead of NVDA's earnings release after US market close on Wednesday (preview commentary upbeat with another big beat and raise expected).
