  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities drifted Friday to end a mixed week. Strongest gains for the Topix and Taiwan's Taiex. Nikkei 225 was also higher. Australia, Singapore and India saw small gains. Hang Seng ended near unchanged while mainland benchmarks were lower. Southeast Asia was also down. US futures mixed, Europe opened with gains. US dollar flat, no movement of note in major Asia crosses but peso declined to record low over inflation concerns. Treasury yields higher across the board, JGB yields also higher. Crude oil giving up some of its overnight gains. Precious metals now higher after a mixed start, base metals inching higher. Kioxia (285A.JP) a notable decliner in Tokyo after it and Sandisk announced a joint $31B investment in Japan over the next six years as well as general weakness in memory-linked names. Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS) both lower in South Korea while in Hong Kong AI play Z.AI (2513.HK) a notable decliner following Thursday's over-sized advance. For the week, the regional MSCI Asia Pac ex Japan index gained a little: there was outperformance from Taiwan, Shanghai and Japan's two main benchmarks; and underperformance in Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Southeast Asia.

    • Few regional developments to give markets a firmer direction. Also nothing fresh in the tariff and trade dynamic besides several commentaries suggesting the US Iran sanctions against China-based entities were more symbolic than substantive given no state-owned companies or banks were included. In economic news, Tokyo core inflation rose to its highest in several months, adding fuel expectations of a BOJ rate hike next month.
