StreetAccount Summary - Japan Pre-market Update: Nikkei 225 futures evening session ended (620.00) at 65830, (0.93%) vs settlement

Aug 30 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • The Japanese equities are expected to open under downward pressure today. Following a late-session Wall Street sell-off on Friday with Nasdaq down (0.5%) and SOX plummet (3.5%), triggered by hawkish remarks from Fed official Kevin Warsh, market expectations for a September rate hike by BOJ have surged. This dual monetary tightening outlook is likely to stoke risk-off sentiment in early Japan trading.

    • US-Iran tensions escalate after US forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, pushing WTI crude +1.7% above $84/bbl. Meanwhile, the yen remains under pressure above ¥160/$, with Japan having deployed a record ¥15.39T in FX intervention over July-August to no lasting effect. US Treasury Secretary Bessent further complicated the picture, warning a "disorderly yen" risks higher US rates.

    • On the corporate front, Toyota extended its sales decline to a sixth consecutive month on weak China demand and Middle East supply disruptions. Separately, Nippon Life signaled it is open to becoming a net JGB buyer next fiscal year (Japan Times ). In sign of Japan's continued appeal to foreign capital, Marshall Wace joined peers to open a Japan office (Japan Times ).
