Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling moderate opening gains in Hong Kong, Australia and South Korea. Japan tracking for small initial decline. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Australian bonds weakening after Treasury yield curve flattened overnight. Yen extending advance against dollar to seven-month high. Crude elevated following pickup in Middle East fighting. Gold and silver pulling lower. Bitcoin fluctuating below $80K.
Middle East tensions helped drive risk-off session overnight with crude hitting three-month high. US struck more Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island in response to latest IRGC missile attack on US naval warship. Earlier rise in oil came after Houthis launched multi-pronged attack on Saudi cities that also dealt damage to oil facilities. Tit-for-tat cycle raising concerns about a wider escalation while Iran pressing ahead with efforts to extend its claims over Strait of Hormuz.
Semis among the outperformers overnight with SOX ending up 1%. OpenAI Astra release has been discussed as a driver of demand for semis and memory. Sentiment also helped up updates from QCOM (collaboration with AMZN on AI data center construction), ASML (won agreement from Samsung Electronics and TSMC to use High NA EUV machines), and Digitimes report INTC raising CPU prices by another 10% from October.
