StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (1.33%), Hang Seng Futures (0.91%), ASX SPI 200 (0.99%), S&P Futures +0.05%

Sep 09 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Australia. S&P 500 futures unchanged after US indexes fell for a second session. Australian and New Zealand bonds tracking earlier backup in Treasury yields. FX markets steady after yen halted its advance against dollar. Crude elevated amid heightened Middle East tensions. Gold and silver off earlier highs. Bitcoin fluctuating around $80K.

    • US-Iran war escalation drove crude to highest since May after US hit more Iranian tankers, IRGC fired ballistic missiles (and threatened to intensify conflict) and Saudis retaliated against Houthi attacks. Strait of Hormuz transit activity remains sparse according to ship trackers. Demand side of the equation getting more attention with China increasing crude purchases. Supply squeeze in refined fuels ahead also fanning concerns about inflationary consequences.

    • Bonds under pressure with Treasury 10Y yield reaching highest since Oct-2023. While Treasury Secretary Bessent said buyback would be at least double $2B previously disclosed, Treasury's announcement seen to have underwhelmed after proposing up to $6B in repurchases of 10-20Y securities vs some previews estimating buyback of $10B. Rate backup also tied into skepticism buyback plan will meaningfully suppress yields if upward drivers remain unaddressed.
