Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mostly positive start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan, South Korea and Australia. Hong Kong tracking for unchanged open. S&P 500 futures weakening after US indexes ended higher on Friday. Australian bond yields down 1-2 bp after Treasury curve bear flattened Friday following US CPI data. FX markets steady. Crude rebounding while gold and silver pulling lower. Bitcoin down to three-week low.
Oil sharply higher following weekend developments. Lot of focus on Houthi capture of strategic locations along Yemen's southern coast, giving it leverage over Bab el-Mandeb Strait in risk to shipping. Saudi Arabia shut East-West pipeline due to damage from drone strike. Planned meeting between Iran and Gulf foreign ministers on Monday to discuss Strait of Hormuz management postponed amid lack of consensus (recall news of meeting was attributed for Friday's pullback in oil).
AI trade in focus after heads of major US AI firms called for slowing development of next-gen models amid safety concerns. Some thought headline effects could influence price action in semis and memory producers though AI safety concerns not expected to derail the longer-term growth story. President Trump also downplayed prospect of toughening regulations. US-listed semis rose Friday with SOX closing up 2%.
FOMC (Wed) expected to hike by 25 bop following Friday's inflation data. BOJ (Fri) expected to hike by 25 bp with more interest surrounding prospect of quickened pace of rate hikes thereafter. China activity indicators (Tues) follows run of soft data underlining continued weakness in domestic economy outside of high-tech manufacturing. RBA Governor Bullock (Fri) scheduled to appear before House committee as September rate hike expectations firm. Japan CPI (Fri) comes after Tokyo core inflation rose to highest since March. Japan trade data (Wed) follows stretch of strong export growth underpinned by semiconductors and related equipment.
