StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Recap: Nikkei (0.81%), Hang Seng +0.45%, Shanghai Composite (0.07%) as of 04:10 ET

Sep 14 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian equities mixed Monday. South Korea's Kospi was the worst performer; Nikkei and Taiex also both lower. Mainland China lower while Hang Seng eked out some gains. Japan's Topix and Singapore outperformed. India closed for a holiday. US futures weaker. Treasury yields flat as 10Y at 4.96%. Dollar stronger against Yen and Aussie. Crude rebounding while gold and silver pulling lower. Bitcoin edging up.

    • Asian tech-focused benchmarks retreated as AI trade under pressure after US AI chiefs called on developers to tap brakes on AI development for safety reasons. Memory makers SK Hynix (000660.KS) and Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) fell by 6.4% and 4.1% respectively while Softbank (9984.JP) fell nearly 11%, most in nearly three months, as its total investment in OpenAI set to reach close to $65B by October while CEO Altman said the AI lab won't list this year. Meanwhile, oil rebounded sharply higher from Friday's pullback after Saudi Arabia shut East-West oil pipeline following drone attacks and planned meeting between Iran and Gulf foreign ministers on Monday was postponed amid lack of consensus.

    • Today's economic calendar is light in Asia in an otherwise very busy week for key central bank decisions. US Federal Reserve (Wed) expected to hike by 25 bp following last Friday's CPI data that showed pickup in core inflation. BOJ (Fri) also expected to tighten by 25 bp with more interest surrounding prospect of central bank quickening pace of rate hikes amid inflation and yen concerns. China will report August activity data on Tuesday, which consensus looks for some stabilization in industrial production and retail sales but deeper contraction in fixed asset investment. In other developments, President Trump downplayed prospect of China canceling next week's Trump-Xi summit in Washignton as Beijing warns of Washington's arms sales to Taiwan. South Korea's main exchange is extending into evening sessions, enabling trading through 8 pm for almost all local stocks.

    • Chubu Electric Power (9502.JP) halted plans to restart atomic power plant in central Japan after independent committee ruled company acted inappropriately when submitting earthquake safety data while its President and Chairman both resigned. Fujitsu (6702.JP) will begin global sales of Japan-made Ai chips from November. Z.AI (2513.HK) stock fell another 9% as worst performer in Hang Seng Tech, extending recent losing streak and down to lowest since March, after company unveiled $5B stock-and-convertible offering that renewed concerns about ROI/monetization.
