Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mostly positive start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening mild opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. South Korea tracking for small initial declines. S&P 500 futures unchanged after US indexes finished near session lows. Australian and New Zealand bonds rebounding after Treasury yields retreated from earlier highs. FX markets steady after dollar index ended marginally higher. Crude down slightly from late April highs. Gold little changed while silver higher. Bitcoin down to four-week low after Senate failed to pass crypto bill.
Bond market selloff continued into the offshore session with Treasury 10Y yield rising to highest since 2007 before pulling back. Latest rate backup considered mostly function of the continued rise in oil and refined fuel prices, fiscal concerns, hawkish shift in monetary policy expectations, AI investment, and resilient economic growth. Continued rise in yields and oil spurring talk about spillover risks to equities.
Fed expected to hike interest rates by 25 bp at Wednesday's meeting. Rate expectations crystalized by August CPI report and pickup in core inflation, with September odds having risen to ~90%. Focus will also be on dot plot and whether revisions show median of more than one rate hike this year. Some economists forecasting 2-3 rate hikes by year-end. Chair Warsh not expected to provide added detail on reaction function or forward guidance.
