Sep 17 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian equities mixed Thursday. Semis contributed to Taiwan's outperformance. Japan, Australia and Singapore all ended higher. Greater China markets fell. India picking up mild gains. US futures rising. Treasury yields lower across tenors. Dollar strongest against Korean won. Yen strengthening somewhat from selloff overnight as attention shifts to BOJ. Oil lower on signs that supply disruptions could ease soon. Gold and silver lower. Bitcoin seeing mild gains.

    • Asian markets largely held their ground following much-anticipated FOMC meeting that delivered its first rate hike in more than three years and most officials penciled in one more hike by year end. Bonds stabilized as Treasuries rose along the curve after hawkish-leaning remarks to tame inflation from Chair Warsh that calmed markets. Among various initial takeaways, Warsh's emphasis on fighting inflation was seen easing concerns about his credibility that grew in aftermath of June's meeting. Press also highlighted how the Fed's rate hike raises stakes for Asia's central banks to follow suit, given currency and rate gap dynamic. BOJ widely expected to tighten on Friday with yen seen at risk if rate hike isn't accompanied by hawkish messaging.

    • Oil pullback, as Brent futures saw first back-to-back losses this month, attributed to some easing of concerns about Middle East supply following reports Saudi Arabia increasing crude flows via Hormuz and aiming to restore 50% of East-West pipeline capacity within days. Press also highlighted Houthi assurances of freedom of navigation in Red Sea to non-Saudi ships, and Trump planning post-war talks with Gulf leaders next week. In regional developments, New Zealand GDP growth moderated by less than forecast with living costs weighing on consumption. Singapore export growth accelerated in August, driven by a 132% surge in electronics exports amid booming AI-related demand. Japan PM Takaichi made few changes in her cabinet reshuffle, retaining almost all core members. FT reported EU has asked China to voluntarily restrict exports of hybrid vehicles or face higher tariffs.

    • In corporate news, SK Hynix (000660.KS) said company is exploring options to boost global competitiveness, and nothing has been finalized as it responded to report of Intel tie-up. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (7011.JP) signed deal with AI startup Preferred Networks to develop AI technologies for defense equipment. Hanwha Systems (272210.KS) signed deal with UAE's EDGE Group to expand cooperation on integrated air defense systems. Z.AI (2513.HK) upgraded ARR guidance by almost 25% following recent $5B capital raising. Huawei (+HUAWEI) unveiled next-gen AI chips, CPUs and high-speed connectivity chips at its conference in Shanghai.
