Sep 20 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mostly negative start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia while South Korea tracking for mild initial gain. S&P 500 futures advancing. Australian bonds weakening after Treasury yields backed up Friday. Crude steady after another selloff. Gold and silver down slightly from Friday. Dollar nearing four week high against yen. Bitcoin unchanged after rallying towards early September highs.

    • Trump-Xi summit the main event this week. Ahead of their meeting, Treasury Secretary Bessent met China Vice Premier He Lifeng for talks on issues such as AI, trade and critical minerals. Extension of trade truce seen as likely outcome of this week's summit with reports highlighting potential for tariff cuts on select energy and farm goods, along with purchase commitments on agricultural products and aircraft. Not much expected on AI safety with US saying open to talks about avoiding shared risks.

    • Quiet week ahead on economic calendar. China kept 1Y and 5Y loan prime rates unchanged, continuing long stretch of no change. RBA Governor Bullock's remarks will attract attention following her hawkish-leaning inflation assessment last week. Australian employment forecast to show unchanged unemployment rate, data not expected to sway expectations of an RBA rate hike this month. Flash PMIs also due out along with Taiwan export orders and preliminary South Korea trade data.
