Sep 22 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised for a positive open Wednesday. Futures in Hong Kong, South Korea and Australia traded firmer. Japan remains closed for holiday. Golden Dragon China index also higher. US contracts steady following broadly mixed overnight performance. Sectors mixed, also within tech with IT higher, software lower. SOX index rose a solid 2.06% though US big tech was mixed. META (META) fell back moderately following an outsized rally in the prior session. US Treasuries were little changed to slightly firmer in choppy trading. Dollar index up 0.1%. Gold finished down 0.2%. Bitcoin futures down 0.2%. WTI crude settled down another 2.0%.

    • Easing crude oil prices widely cited as the underlying driver overnight. Saudi restart of East-West pipeline alleviated supply concerns. Brent put options saw record volumes Tuesday. Sentiment also supported by signs of progress towards a US-Iran settlement, though tempered by Trump's indication that an agreement might be reached after the midterms. Iran reportedly offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if US eases military pressure and lifts blockade of Iran ports. Lower oil and recent stabilization in US yields alleviated brakes on AI optimism. But META Muse implications posing a headwind against other sectors at risk of disruption/displacement. Some talk of markets hedging against slower than expected Fed rate hikes reflecting views that risks are skewed to the downside from what's currently priced in.

    • Regional geopolitics remain the main theme in Asia ahead of the Trump-Xi summit. Xi skipping UN General Assembly with bilateral talks the priority. Japan PM Takaichi met Trump on the UN sidelines and discussed Asia economic security with China in mind. Latest summit previews did not add much since officials Sunday agreed to carve out nonsensitive goods eligible for tariff relief. AI also top of the agenda, though increasing attention on Taiwan as the pivotal issue. Xi expected to press Trump to stop arms sales. Markets focused on a trade truce extension; Greer indicated an agreement won't be reached this week though markets may still take lack of announcement as a disappointment. Extension duration also a key factor amid disagreement as Greer signaled US seeking short term, while China prefers longer truce through Trump's term ending early 2029. Reports Chinese CEOs unlikely to be part of Xi's delegation raising questions over the prospects for corporate deals.
