  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities ended largely higher Tuesday but most benchmarks closed well away from their highs. Strong early gains in South Korea mostly pared by the close, but the Taiex ended at a fresh record high. Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hong Kong all opened higher but closed near unchanged. Australia ended with a small gain, Singapore outperformed but the rest of Southeast Asia was mixed, India trading slightly lower. Japan remained closed for a holiday. US futures now flat, Europe opened lower. US dollar flat, yen weakening but quiet elsewhere. Oil ending a four-day losing streak with Brent back above $100/bl. Precious metals sharply lower, base metals mixed. Cryptocurrencies lower following the overnight surge.

    • Asia stocks opened higher Tuesday on readthrough from the strong performance overnight on Wall Street but the rally stalled mid-morning and declined thereafter just as US futures also peaked. The rally petered out just as oil prices regained their positive momentum as traders waited for developments at the UN over the Iran conflict, and where President Trump is due to address the general assembly and possibly meet his Iranian counterpart.

    • Few other meaningful catalysts today. RBA governor Bullock reiterated the need for policy to tackle inflation while the RBNZ governor also gave hawkish comments on oil prices. Markets waiting for concrete developments on US-China trade negotiations following Monday's positive statements as USTR Greer said the two sides would seek an extension to their trade-war truce.

    • In corporate developments, Alibaba (9988.HK) CEO Wu said its new Zhenwu V900 accelerator tripled the performance of its predecessor and set the company a target to build 20 gigawatts of data center capacity for its cloud services by 2032. Tencent (700.HK) announced the launch of a fresh image-generation model as it moves to catch rivals Alibaba and ByteDance (+BYTE.HK). LG Electronics (066570.KS) is to expand its strategic partnership with Microsoft that covers AI and data centers. MediaTek's (2454.TT) flagship single-chip C10Max may be adopted by the upcoming high-end Googlebook. New World Development (17.HK) and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority are in talks to sell their respective 50% stakes in the Hong Kong Hyatt Regency hotel to UOL Group (U14.SP) for an estimated HK$3B. NSE's (+NSE.IN) IPO was more than five times oversubscribed after the final day of bidding.
