StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.02%, Hang Seng Futures (0.25%), ASX SPI 200 (0.33%), S&P Futures (0.12%)

Sep 24 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised to open mostly lower Friday. Futures in Japan were little changed to higher, while Hong Kong and Australia were lower. Much of the region offline for holidays (mainland China, South Korea, Taiwan). Almost all Japan ADRs fell, while Golden Dragon China index lost 0.67%. US contracts softer after S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed flat, paring intraday losses. Sectors mostly weaker, with tech lagging. SOX index declined 0.33% with US big tech mostly lower. US Treasuries weaker with curve steepening. Dollar index was up 0.2%. Gold finished down 0.5%. Bitcoin futures down 0.1%. WTI crude settled up 2.7%, though off highs.

    • Market sentiment continues to revolve around the Middle East conflict translating to higher oil prices, inflation and bond yields. Follow-through US Treasury weakness was broadly cited as the main headwind for equities. Latest reports Saudi Arabia intercepted six ballistic missiles fired by Houthis prompted the latest setback, offsetting some encouraging progress in the East-West Pipeline throughput and US-Iran discussions of a 'phased' peace deal. US Treasury buyback results fell short of the $6B quota. Fedspeak continued to lean hawkish, affirming percolating expectations for a rate hike in October. Tech stocks succumbed to the broad overhang, though META (META) stood out as the main bright spot after unveiling its Meta Charm device to run Muse.

    • Trump-Xi talks broadly playing out as expected with few specifics. Xinhua only published a headline citing Xi praising the "new trade arrangement" in an apparent acknowledgement of the truce extension. Nothing as yet on purchase commitments. Boeing (BA) said to be losing hopes for a new round of aircraft orders on top of the 200 planes in the May deal. Entourage of Chinese business leaders reportedly traveled to Washington following reports they would not attend the White House state dinner, though upshot unclear. Both leaders confirmed no inclination to curb AI competition, though Xi noted there is more room for cooperation and was open to dialogue on risks/benefits and prevention of misuse. Highlight was Xi expressing hopes the US will oppose Taiwan independence, marking a notable strengthening in language.

    • Developments light elsewhere, PBOC quarterly policy report reaffirmed continuation of a moderately loose policy stance. Key phrases also included need for increased counter-cyclical adjustments and reasonable recovery in prices. Some back-and-forth in FX sentiment as yen declines continue, touching the 159 level for the first time since Bessent rhetoric gained traction at the start of the month. Dollar-driven dynamics reinforced cognizance of the limitations of intervention. Some discussion of foreign investor appetite for superlong JGBs in curve-flattener trades based on views BOJ rate hike expectations are overdone. Still, risk events such as the next BOJ Tankan or USD/JPY returning to 160 mentioned as potential catalysts.
