Sep 24 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities ended mostly lower Thursday. Taiwan's Taiex closed slightly lower, Greater China declines were led by Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Australia was lower but off its trough. India currently sharply down, Southeast Asia also weak. Japan's Nikkei finished around 0.7% higher as it marked-to-market after a three-day holiday but the Topix fell. US futures lower, Europe opened mostly lower. US dollar flat, little movement of note in Asia forex. JGB yields rising to decades-long highs across the curve, Treasury yields higher with 5Y now also above 5%. Crude higher with Brent spiking back above $100/bl in late trading but catalyst specifics unclear. Precious metals mixed, base metals unchanged.

    • Asia equities closed weaker Thursday with the mood turning more cautious as sovereign bond yields edged higher, and despite positive tones over US-China trade and US-Iran ceasefire talks. Yield on the 10Y JGB rose to nearly 3.1%, the highest since 1996, while Treasury yields rose again in Asia trading. Fed Fund Futures now pricing in a 71% chance of a Fed rate hike at October's meeting, up from around 50% on Wednesday morning, as bond markets grapple with stronger-than-expected US flash PMIs, elevated oil prices and the potential for another supply-side inflationary shock caused by a spike in diesel prices, and the US mid-term elections just a few weeks after the Fed decision.

    • Few regional developments today to alter the overarching narrative. The US and China agreed to extend their trade-war truce to early January just as President Xi landed in Washington for a state visit, although some commentators were disappointed it wasn't a six- or 12-month extension. Australia August employment data was mixed as the unemployment rate rose but total employment improved to a record high. Japan flash PMI for September showed business activity growth had decelerated while inflation pressures eased slightly.

    • SoftBank (9984.JP) has issued $11.1B in euro- and dollar denominated bonds in its AI financing push. DeepSeek's (+DEEPSEEK) annualized revenue has reached $1B, according to reports in TheInformation. Fonterra (FCG.NZ) has flagged risks to global milk supplies from the impact of El Niño. NSE (544937.IN) shares rose in their trading debut and instantly became India's ninth-largest company by market cap. Rio Tinto (RIO.AU) said it is planning to expand its metals trading business to include derivatives and more metal from other producers.
