Synopsis:
European equity markets ended lower. Follows weaker performance on Wednesday. Energy, and food/beverage the best performers on the session. Autos, tech, basic resources and travel/leisure the main laggards.
On the macro front, German Ifo business climate survey jumped in September after run of other positive survey data. French business sentiment eased and consumer confidence held stable at weak levels. UK BRC consumer confidence slumped in September. Elsewhere, European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) Aug new car registrations for EU + EFTA + UK +5.3% y/y.
Central bank policy decisions in focus with Riksbank, Norges Bank and SNB updates. SNB on hold, as expected. Said mid-term inflationary pressure increased only slightly. Riksbank unchanged and guided for a rate rise later this year with inflation risks skewed to the upside. Norges Bank hiked key rate by 25 bps to 4.5%.
In other news, press reports that UK Treasury open to smaller fiscal headroom to reduce tax hikes after Burnham signaled reluctance to raise taxes.
In corporate news highlights, in M&A, Schneider Electric (SU.FP) confirmed a €70/sh cash offer for Shelly Group (SLYG.BU) in a deal valued at €1.2B, supported by founders, while Continental (CON.GR) agreed to sell Conti Trade Australia to Tuhu Car for ~A$403M.
Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, key releases will include, amongst others, Germany Oct consumer confidence - GfK, Eurozone Aug M3 money supply, and UK Sep consumer confidence - GfK.
