  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signaling small initial gains in Japan, flat starts in Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures slightly lower. Australian bonds weakening in contrast to Treasuries strengthening on Friday. Dollar recovering from Friday's lows against yen. Crude rebounding while gold and silver pulling lower. Bitcoin coming off Friday lows.

    • Oil higher on latest setback in Middle East diplomatic efforts after President Trump said he rejected Iran's SoH proposal and Iranian negotiators said they will not soften their position. Diplomatic door left ajar after Trump said he expects talks to resume this week and Iran's foreign minister also voicing readiness for negotiations. Main sticking point appears to be Iran's willingness to make concessions on nuclear issue.

    • Press reported US and China agreed to more favorable tariff treatment of non-sensitive goods valued at $30B, including US agriculture, medical devices and Chinese consumer goods. China readout of Trump-Xi summit also mentioned tariff agreement though left out mention of specific product categories. Next set of talks scheduled for November. Section on AI was brief with two sides agreeing to establish communication channel for AI incidents.

    • Economic activity picks up this week with RBA expected to hike cash rate on Tuesday. China PMIs (Wed) forecast to show official manufacturing gauge edged into positive territory. Asia PMIs out on Thursday. Japan to see industrial production, labor market, retail sales and Tokyo CPI, though key event will be BOJ Tankan as a primary determinant of rate hike expectations. South Korea trade, CPI and industrial production data also due out. Australia headline inflation seen climbing above 4% on higher fuel prices..
