Synopsis:
Asian markets set for flat start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling unchanged opens in Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and South Korea. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Australian bonds little changed after Treasury yields rose along the curve overnight. Crude gaining while gold and silver adding to earlier declines. FX markets steady after dollar clawed back earlier losses against yen. Bitcoin fluctuating.
AI trade underperformed with semis/memory mostly lower (SOX down 1.6%). SK Hynix's ADRs fell 5%, extending Monday's selloff in South Korea that was attributed to AI security concerns (OpenAI paused training of frontier models) and Solidigm IPO scrutiny. Nasdaq Golden Dragon index rose 1% overnight after China AI trade (semis, model developers) came under pressure Monday following reports Beijing may greenlight purchases of Nvidia chips.
RBA expected to raise cash rate by 25 bp to 4.60%. Rate hike expectations supported by above-target inflation and upside risks stemming from Middle East conflict, coupled with resilient demand and labor market tightness. Statement will be scrutinized for policy signals, including preparedness to hike cash rate further in response to upside inflation risks. Governor Bullock's press conference expected to reinforce her hawkish tone. Some economists predict RBA will follow up with another increase in November.
Iran headlines volatile with overnight weakness attributed to reports President Trump willing to provide sanctions relief in return for concrete progress toward nuclear deal. Trump later described Axios report that he offered sanctions relief as untrue. Bloomberg also reported Iranian officials pessimistic about deal to end conflict before November midterm elections. Oil has since turned up following volatile Monday session that saw crude futures end well below earlier highs.
