  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed lower and near the lowest levels of the session. Retail, miners and utilities were the top gainers whilst insurance, media and construction were the big laggards. Follows mostly weaker levels on Tuesday.

    • Lot of macro data to digest at month-end. In Europe, French and Italian inflation readings for September posted multi-year highs. Five large German states also printed higher inflation on Iran-war fuel costs. German retail sales rebounded in August and import prices increased, but labor market remained weak in latest update. UK Lloyds business barometer fell sharply to a 17-month low in September. UK final Q2 GDP revised up to 0.5% versus flash estimate of 0.4%. UK auto output rebounded in August.

    • BoE FPC says risk outlook worsened in September. Dovish BoE member Taylor said did not see compelling case for a rate hike after hawkish-leaning comments from senior officials late last week.

    • Press digests PM Burnham's speech from Tuesday, which include nationalization of utilities, changes to the state pension guarantee, electoral reform and closer ties with Europe.

    • On the corporate front, Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW.GR) held day 1 of its Capital Market Day 2026 yesterday, introducing new interim 2028 targets, and Gerresheimer (GXI.GR) reported preliminary Q2 earnings, indicating it expects a stronger H2 with improved earnings and a significantly improved financial situation. In the UK, Greggs (GRG.LN) issued a Q3 trading update with like-for-like sales growth of 3.4% and now expects a modestly improved 2026 outcome. Saga (SAGA.LN) beat expectations with strong H1 growth and upgraded its FY profit guidance, while Spire Healthcare (SPI.LN) saw H1 profits decline but maintained broadly flat FY26 guidance. Future Plc (FUTR.LN) confirmed trading in line with expectations but paused its share buyback to prioritise deleveraging, and 3i Infrastructure (3IN.LN) reaffirmed it remains on track to hit its FY27 return and dividend targets. In M&A deals, Goodwin (GDWN.LN) confirmed its ~£1.1B disposal of a substantial part of its Mechanical Engineering Division to Cerberus, with the remaining Refractory and Duvelco businesses trading resiliently and a significant shareholder cash return under consideration.
