Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Friday trade. Futures pointing to opening declines in Japan and Hong Kong, flat start in South Korea and initial gains in Australia. Mainland China closed for National Day holiday. S&P 500 futures up slightly afterhours. Australian bonds rebounding after Treasury yields retreated following recent surge higher. FX markets steady after dollar hit one-week high against yen. Crude unchanged after rallying 3% Thursday. Gold and silver hovering near overnight highs. Bitcoin remains range bound.
Yields pulled back after Treasury long-end rates hit 24-year highs. Strength pronounced at the front end of the curve, though nothing specific behind the move. While the drivers of the yield backup have been widely discussed, this week's cooler PCE data has driven a modestly dovish repricing of the rate path. Yields fell even as crude rebounded amid lack of diplomatic progress in Middle East and latest PMIs revealed firms facing ongoing cost pressures.
US nonfarm payrolls the big economic data point Friday. Consensus looking for a deceleration in headline employment from August's hotter-than-expected print while jobless rate seen unchanged. October rate hike odds have fallen following dovish remarks from NY Fed's Williams and softer August PCE though some economists don't expect softer nonfarm payrolls print to derail expectations for another rate hike by year-end.
