  • Synopsis:

    • Asia markets ended mixed Thursday. Australia's ASX underperformed and fell 2% to a more than three-month low. Small losses in India and Southeast Asia. Japan's Nikkei 225 sharply higher as its chip stocks rallied, Topix was also higher. Gains for the Kospi and Taiex. Greater China closed for a holiday. US futures indicate a mixed open although are volatile, Europe sharply lower in the opening hour. US dollar strengthening with DXY index closing in on 102, weakness in Asia currencies. Treasury yields higher across tenors with 10Y at 24-year high, JGB and other Asia sovereign yields higher. Crude oil futures higher, Brent nearing $100/bl once again. • Asia stocks saw a polarized trading day to start Q4 with very strong gains in several Japan-based chip stocks but Australia's ASX slumped to a three-month low. In Japan, Kioxia (285A.JP), Advantest (6857.JP) and Tokyo Electron (8035.JP) all surged following Micron's strong outlook statement after the close on Wall Street; Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), SK Hynix (000660.KS) and TSMC (2330.TT) all higher on the same report. No definitive catalyst for the decline on the ASX although local press cited the lack of chip exposure, and recent pressure of yields, inflation and the threat of another RBA rate hike hitting sentiment.

    • In other developments, President Trump announced $200B in investments from South Korea however local news were skeptical on the reports saying only the Texas power plant had been agreed. South Korea September exports rose more than 100% y/y to a record high $120.9B on global demand for AI products. Regional PMIs showed Asia's factories were still expanding almost everywhere especially in the tech-dominated northern nations. The BOJ's summary of opinions said the bank's policy has shifted to preventing inflation from overshooting its target, pivoting from a 13-year policy of gradually lifting price growth. BOJ Tankan survey for September was slightly softer than expected. China finance minister Lan said Beijing is mulling additional fiscal policies to reach its own annual growth target.

    • Nidec (6594.JP) shares fell sharply again after its auditor declined to give an opinion on its financial statements; company confirmed sale of Components unit to Carlyle Group for ¥103B. PHC Holdings (6523.JP) confirmed it had received a takeover proposal from Toho Holdings (8129.JP) but has not made a decision on its merits as of yet. SoftBank (9984.JP) said it had completed the final $10.0B tranche of funding into OpenAI paid for by proceeds from foreign currency-denominated bond sale. Tencent (700.HK) has struck a deal to lease 100K chips from Oracle via its Southeast Asia datacenters to accelerate its AI program. SK Hynix's (000660.KS) said It has not decided on future of its Solidigm (+SOLIDIGM) unit following reports earlier this week that it was looking to list it.
