StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Recap: Nikkei (0.94%), Hang Seng (2.60%), Shanghai Composite closed as of 04:10 ET

Oct 02 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities ended with a negative tilt Friday. Nikkei reversed some of yesterday's gains; Topix lower again. Steep decline for the Hang Seng; Singapore also lower. Australia's ASX bounced back from yesterday's falls; South Korea and Taiwan both higher. Mainland China and India markets closed for holidays. US futures gaining. US dollar retracing some of its overnight gain while yen stronger. Treasury yields little changed after pullback overnight. Crude futures sharply lower in Asia afternoon session. Precious metals edging up. Bitcoin higher too.

    • Asia stocks largely under pressure as investors grappled with turbulent bond market ahead of key US NFP report. Headline payrolls consensus of +94K, which would mark a deceleration from August's +162K print. However, previews show fairly wide dispersion of forecasts. Unemployment rate currently projected to hold at 4.1% with labor force participation rate steady at 61.6%. A strong report could revive bets on another rate hike this month, currently priced just below 30% after Fed officials this week signaled lack of urgency. Heaviest losses seen in Hong Kong with index down to four-month low, pressured by rises in Treasury yields, disappointment over China's mini stimulus and lack of southbound buying due to holiday in the mainland.

    • In regional developments, Tokyo core inflation accelerated by more than expected to highest in 11 months, exceeding BOJ's 2% target for first time since January. Main drivers largely came from special factors (nursery school fees, water utilities). Services inflation highest since Nov-2023. Data seen backing case for another rate hike by year-end. South Korea inflation eased in line with estimates. BOK said inflation expected to remain around 3% in October amid core pricing pressures, reinforcing its tightening bias. USTR Greer said no date set for tariff cuts between US and China for $30B of non-sensitive goods for each other. Trump administration will also unveil countermeasures over overcapacity in coming weeks, with additional tariffs on 16 countries, including China and Japan, under consideration.

    • In company news, Bain Capital said it would explore investment in Hong Kong's embattled developer New World Development (17.HK). SoftBank (9984.JP) completed investment in OpenAI's latest private fundraising round, pushing its ownership interest to 13%. Toshiba Corp (6588.JP) said it is to double hard disk production capacity used in AI. BYD (1211.HK) September global sales rose for fifth consecutive month supported by strong exports.
