Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan and small initial gains in Hong Kong. South Korea and Taiwan closed for public holidays. S&P 500 futures little changed afterhours. Australian bonds strengthening after Treasury curve bull flattened overnight. FX markets steady with dollar unchanged against majors. Crude coming off earlier highs. Gold and silver seeing small gains. Bitcoin flat near three-week low.
Semis under pressure overnight with SOX closing down 3%. Weakness attributed largely to reports OpenAI revenue approaching $50B, $20B below widely reported $70B figure. Post-earnings declines in TSMC and Samsung Electronics revived talk of a higher bar going into reporting season. AI infrastructure financing getting attention, raising more concerns about circularity and tech sector leverage (rising CDS spreads, corporate yields). Rising interest rates also pressuring tech valuations.
Volatile session for crude, which rallied initially following latest reports US ordered strike plans for Iran that will target energy and nuclear facilities. Oil came off session highs after Trump said US will not attack before midterm elections and that productive discussions are being held with Tehran. Stepped up Iranian attacks on tankers transiting Strait of Hormuz and intensified fighting in Yemen have been another focus this week.
