Indeed, lots of press coverage on high-stakes EU-China trade talks as Chinese commerce minister Wang Wentao receives EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic in Beijing as Brussels set October deadline to reset trade ties (SCMP). FT sources said Beijing has rejected EU's proposal to voluntarily limit exports of hybrid vehicles to the bloc to about 15%, compared with more than a third today or face retaliatory measures. European Commission now discussing temporary safeguard trade defense measures that could be applied without evidence of dumping, aiming to agree a number Beijing can accept privately without retaliating. SCMP added Brussels hopes China will agree to moderate its exports in a single sector, in so-called "proof of concept" arrangement that could be extended to more sectors, by end of Sefcovic's visit on Friday. Beijing is also seen as no longer rejecting outright that there are problems in its trade relations with Europe as it hopes to retain broader access to European market amid growing economic reliance on exports. Came after France and Germany jointly called for new measures to tackle market-distorting practices aimed at China (Bloomberg), while China responded that it also has tools ready if trade tensions escalate (Bloomberg).
Oil strengthening following latest Middle East headlines. Recovering crude flows have been a press focus though kinetic activity picking up with Iran stepping up attacks on tankers and Saudi-Houthi intensifying. Report Trump is seeking to develop strike plans against Iran before midterms has also grabbed attention. Oil strength corresponding with rebound in long-end Treasury yields following overnight stabilization attributed to strong 10Y auction.
The UK housing market weakened in Sep-26 as rising interest rate expectations dampened buyer confidence, with new buyer enquiries falling to -22% and agreed sales slipping to -18%, according to the latest RICS Residential Market Survey (link ). House prices faced increased downward pressure, with the headline price balance dropping to -32%, though 12-month expectations suggest a broadly flat outlook. Regional disparities persisted, with London performing worse than the national average while Northern Ireland and Scotland saw modest price growth. In contrast, the lettings market remained tight, with tenant demand rising for a third consecutive month while landlord supply stayed constrained, keeping rental growth expectations elevated at +37% for the next three months. RICS noted that while the market faces a period of subdued activity, the results do not signal a significant change in direction.
