  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed lower, bit off worst levels. France lagging on civil unrest. Banks, basic resources and industrials lead the selloff. Tech and energy the notable gainers. Follows last week's positive performance.

    • Downbeat sentiment in Europe after last week's positive performance largely due to defensive rotation. Bond markets stabilized but cost of living pressures remain in the spotlight with energy costs elevated. Against this backdrop, French civil unrest in the headline with recent protests worsening over the weekend. Some reports highlighting worries across the region with elections next year in several countries. Has contributed to some of the weakness in the euro, which has also been blamed on increase in Ukraine-Russia tensions. French stocks, especially banks, and French bonds the biggest decliners on the day. ECB President Lagarde said bond selloff to slow inflation, reinforcing expectations of unchanged policy this month.

    • Attention also remains on AI trade. Lot of focus lately on AI financing and rising funding costs increasing pressure on balance sheets. CoreWeave source of latest angst amid spike in its yields and CDS spreads. IPO timelines in doubt with Bloomberg sources noting Nscale investors urging it to lower valuation target and Microsoft withdrawing from Nscale UK data center deal. China competition another focus after DeepSeek released updated V4.1-Flash on weekend with stronger performance metrics. Outside of AI, weekend headlines revolved around return of safe-haven status for Treasuries, Trump's framing of Russia deals as necessary to keep peace talks alive, Houthi advances in Yemen, inflation pressure (food, travel), rate surge impact on CRE, and US fiscal imbalances.

    • Quiet start to the week in Europe for macro updates. Latest update from property portal Rightmove highlighted increase in UK asking prices for newly listed properties despite fragile sentiment.

    • In corporate news flow; in Norway, Mowi (MOWI.NO) shares are trading higher post Q3 update with operating EBIT ahead of consensus, while Arctic Fish Holding (AFISH.NO) shares are down on worse-than-expected operational EBIT.
