Oct 20 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised for a higher open Wednesday. Futures in Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Australia traded firmer. Japan ADRs skewed higher, Golden Dragon China index higher. US contracts higher, extending cash session strength. Sectors skewed to gains though IT and communications lagged. Tech leads softer with SOX index down 0.29% with US big tech mostly lower. US Treasuries were mixed with some curve flattening. Dollar index declined 0.3%. Gold finished down 0.4%. Bitcoin futures up 1%. WTI crude finished down 1.8%, near worst levels.

    • US after-hours earnings the immediate focus. Super Micro Computer (SMCI) jumped after guidance notably beat. SpaceX (SPCX) also rallied as net income blew past consensus. Musk said SpaceX and Tesla (TSLA) exploring merger. Netflix (NFLX) sold off after hours on the back of weak guidance. Early results so far boding well for tech sentiment, adding to semblance of stabilization in the AI trade. Yet, selective strategies consistent with wide variance and caution remains. Press reported Anthropic eyeing $750B in compute spend, S-1 showed ~$80B net loss in 1H. Overnight crude oil declines attributed to mediation efforts to quell Houthi attacks though a subsequent report indicated Iran dragging US talks to weaken Trump's position ahead of the US midterm elections.

    • In Asia, Elice (015850.KS) plunge on yesterday's debut reverberated overnight to adversely affect AI sentiment, though there was no follow-through. CATL (3750.HK) missed on Q3 net income, ADRs down 11%. Press sources indicated ByteDance, Alibaba (9988.HK), Tencent (700.HK) have placed orders for more than $35B worth of Nvidia (NVDA) RTX PRO 5500 GPUs, compliant with US export restrictions. However, Nvidia can't guarantee such supplies that far exceed planned production. Beijing protested US restrictions on DeepSeek products and warned of countermeasures. SoftBank (9984.JP) and AI financing competition remains in the spotlight after a report indicated OpenAI in talks with investors for another $30B funding round ahead of Anthropic's IPO.

    • Regional macro developments were light. China NDRC pledged greater efforts to grow domestic demand though with no details. Follows somewhat better than expected China GDP and activity data that placed growth momentum back on track to meet the 2026 target of 4.5-5.0%, though this also lowered expectations for future stimulus. Japan politics focused on the consumption tax cut and ruling coalition seeking to push the bill through in unusually short parliamentary debate while key specifics such as funding sources yet to be clarified. Japan customs trade data set to be the main macro event today.
